Habitat Preservation and Enhancement
Stewardship of the natural world
Funding or Management of Projects
…such as Emy’s Meadow, Clegg Meadow, leasing scrubland for Dickcissel nests, installing Purple Martin boxes in several locations (including at Sharps at Waterford where there is also a kestrel box and a wetland area funded by HCBC), and a Motus Tower and pollinator meadow at the Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant. Future efforts could include more pollinator meadows and grassland for nesting birds. The emphasis is on projects that enhance protection of birds and their habitat, especially in Howard County as well as projects that improve collection of data about the distribution and migration of birds.
Nest Boxes
We offer help and encourage efforts of others to provide artificial nesting boxes and enclosures in Howard County to supplement the naturally available spaces for some of the bird species here whose numbers are declining.
HCC-MP Pollinator Meadow
Sue Probst
There is an 11-acre plot at Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant that is being developed into a pollinator meadow that will attract butterflies and other pollinators plus the birds that feed on those pollinators. Howard County Bird Club will be paying for maintenance.
Waterford Flats
Russ Ruffing
Howard County Bird Club has developed this and other bird-friendly improvements on Sharp’s Farm at Waterford such as a Purple Martin box and Wood Duck box.
MOTUS
Gregg Petersen
We funded the installation of the Howard County Bird Club Motus Wildlife Tracking Station at Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant and is investigating installation of another tower in Howard County. Motus is an international research community working together to study the movement and behavior of birds, bats, and insects
Over $100,000 to preserve habitat!
That’s right! The Howard County Bird Club has contributed over $100,000 to help save habitat —and your contributions have made it possible. The contributions have gone to local, state, national, and international organizations to promote the knowledge, development, protection, and conservation of bird life and other naturally occurring species and their habitats. Organizations and projects we have supported. Our annual seed sales funded our habitat grants for 50 years.
