Elkhorn Garden Plots

6669 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, Maryland 21045

Size: A few acres

Habitat: Vegetable and flower garden plots surrounded by deciduous shrubs, trees, and grass.

Best Months: Fall and early winter.

Coverage Time: One-half hour to as much as one to two hours at the peak of fall migration.

Trails/Paths: Mown grass strips allow access in the plot area. Do not walk into
individual plots.

Notable Birds: Black-crowned Night-Heron, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Alder Flycatcher, Marsh Wren, Orange-crowned Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Connecticut
Warbler, Mourning Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Dickcissel, Purple Finch, and Pine Siskin.

Amenities: Three picnic tables, mostly for use of the gardeners.

Handicapped Access: Not easily accessible.

Operation and Hours: Howard County park; dawn to dusk.

Special Attractions: Late season southern butterflies are regularly spotted among the flowers planted in many plots.

Nearby Sites: Sewell’s Orchard Community Park, Lake Elkhorn/ Forebay Pond.
