Young Birder

It’s never too early to start birding!

The Howard County Bird Club is encouraging our young birders (ages 7-18, along with their accompanying adult) to meet informally every month or so. Young Birder Work Group chair Terri Berkheimer (tgtberk@gmail.com) will serve as their point person should they or an adult organizer need assistance with communications, picking a date and location or need support from the bird club (i.e., loaner binoculars). Our hope is that the more experienced young birders will lead the bird walks. This is a new endeavor, so we’ll see what direction it takes, as we focus on fostering a sense of community among the young birders and point them to available resources as needed. Need more information? Use the Contact Us form.

You are always welcome on our regular field trips, and, as a member, you always will get our Rare Bird Alerts. If you are not yet a member and want to join, go to Howard County Bird Club page on MOS website and follow the directions.

Young Birder MOS Backpack Essay Contest

Are you interested in birds but need the equipment to do it? Then this is the contest for you! The Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) and Howard County Bird Club (HCBC) have teamed up to provide you the opportunity to win a backpack, a pair of binoculars, a bird book AND a free one-year youth membership in the HCBC by completing a short essay (no more than 300 words) telling us how this would help your interest in birds!  Please write an essay telling us how you could use a backpack, a pair of binoculars, and a bird field guide to improve your birding.
