Nighthawk Happy Hour
Trip leader: Dave Ziolkowski Recorder: Dave Ziolkowski Photographer: Mary Lou Clark |
Date of trip: September 4, 2025 |
Location: New Cut Landfill | Number attending: 20 |
Details: WEATHER: Sunset at 19:31. Partly cloudy sky, 75°F with 74% humidity thanks to a quick shower that had passed about 2 hours prior. NOTES: After parking at Worthington Elementary School, 20 participants made a short walk to set up chairs and a drink cooler atop the grassy knoll of the former New Cut landfill, which offers a wide open vista and nearly unobstructed views of the western horizon. Weather wise, there was a deep low pressure parked over NW Ontario whose counterclockwise rotation pushed a weak cold front towards us from our west. Meanwhile, where we stood, light winds were coming out of the SE and the meeting of the air masses was evident about 10 mi. west of us, where a low pressure trough was sending up clouds and setting off storms. A great abundance of Common Nighthawk were foraging between us and those storms, just ahead of the front. | |
