Trip leaders: Kevin Heffernan and Woody Merkle Date of trip: June 20, 2023
Location: Mount Pleasant Number attending: 28 including several children
Details: A butterfly walk was held at Mt. Pleasant as part of the Pollinator Week celebration, co-sponsored by the Howard County Conservancy and the Howard County Bird Club. It was a cloudy day with winds of 8 to 10 mph, and a high temperature of 81 degrees. The two leaders split the participants into two groups. Fifteen species were seen. The walk covered much of the grassland loop, the small garden in front of the Gudelsky Center, and the Tulip Poplar trail to the Butterfly garden and the trails over to the Hodge Podge Lodge, the Community Garden and the Honors Garden. The target species for this walk were Coral and Banded Hairstreak which are flying for a few weeks at this time of year. Both were seen with the five Coral Hairstreaks being noteworthy. This is the first butterfly walk held at Mt. Pleasant this year; five more are scheduled.
