Planned Giving

HOW

Through planned giving, individuals are able to arrange gifts to be made at a future date, helping to support the long-term goals of the Howard County Bird Club (HCBC). Making a gift to HCBC may reduce the amount of your estate subject to taxation because HCBC is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

There are several gift arrangements from which to choose, whether you want to put your gift to work today or to benefit HCBC  after your lifetime:

  • Will or bequest
  • Bank accounts, IRAs, and retirement plans
  • Charitable remainder trusts
  • IRA qualified charitable distribution
  • Gifts of stocks and securities.

When arranging your planned gift, it is important to consult your financial adviser and attorney to outline the details and develop the legal documentation of your gift.

Sample Bequest Language

“I give the Howard County Bird Club, a Nonprofit Corporation, incorporated in Maryland, the sum of $ __________ (or alternately, _____ percent of the residuary of my estate), for its general purposes to protect wildlife, land, and water resources.”

Life Insurance Designations

Making a beneficiary designation through your life insurance plan is an easy and affordable way to support the work of the Howard County Bird Club (HCBC). By naming HCBC as a beneficiary of an individual or group term life insurance policy, the benefits from your policy pass to us free of federal estate tax after your lifetime.

Retirement Plan Gifts

Naming the Howard County Bird Club as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401k or other qualified retirement plan is a simple and tax-efficient way to benefit nature. When left to a qualified charity, the residue of your plan passes on to HCBC tax-free, avoiding both the estate tax and income tax.

Beneficiary Designations

The easiest way to include HCBC in your estate is by designating us as either a  primary or contingent beneficiary of an account, such as a bank account, brokerage account, IRA or retirement account. The process is simple. Just request paperwork from the holder of your account to add HCBC as a beneficiary.
